Wallows' Quarantine EP 'Remote’ will bring joy to your bedroom

After releasing a debut album in 2019, LA based trio Wallows (Dylan Minnette, Braeden Lemasters and Cole Preston) is back with a new EP Remote, which was made under the pandemic.

The EP recurs from indie / psychedelic rock to bedroom synth-pop, which determines the musical direction of Wallows.

Another point that draws my attention while listening was the transition between each song. It seems like Wallows encourage every listener to listen to this six-track EP in a correct order and in full; this is a unique Remote experience and shuffle plays would result in the loss of fun like this.

Dark-pop princess Muki shrugs it off in 'I Make Boys Cry'

Muki’s ‘I Make Boys Cry’ is an electro, hyperpop tune that draws comparisons to the likes of SOPHIE, 100 Gecs and Charli XCX with its retro futuristic, glitchy aesthetic. Muki says the song was originally supposed to be a melancholic break-up ballad, stating “I had just gotten out of a relationship and was being made to feel guilty and responsible for upsetting my ex”.

In the same interview, she said she “wanted to explore these darker themes but ended up twisting the messaging by sugar coating it with fun synths to make it sound spicy. Even though this song is essentially a ballad it is explored in the context of a wannabe Kylie Minogue dance anthem.” The transformation of the tune, from sombre ballad to electro pop song, gives a totally different vibe to the lyrics as she sings, “I make boys cry, I’m so good at goodbyes”. It becomes an unapologetic alpha anthem about letting go with no remorse, giving listeners a different introspective to many popular love songs as she takes responsibility for the breakup singing, His tears, they’ll shatter like glass on the pavement. Don’t know why it was me he put his faith in.”

Down Days? Not for long with Charlotte Jane’s encouraging brand-new track

Yorkshire based singer Charlotte Jane gets utterly real with us, with her latest single ‘Down days’. A song so fitting to everyday life, and completely relatable to almost everybody with her hitting you where it hurts, type of lyrics.

‘Down Days’ is all about being OK, battling with your demons (or in this case, more of a monster) and how it is fine to feel this way sometimes. The song, although written pre–coronavirus, reflects the current year well, mirroring the ups and the downs of the human mind.

Some lyrics are very fitting to the current climate and mood of the past year, “I’m not falling back, I’m stumbling aside”, shows a way with words which puts life into perspective and highlights how it is never as bad as it seems. “They’re bound to come around more than once in your life” is more factual if not anything else, tells us ‘Down Days’ do quite literally come and go.

Cariss Auburn provides escapism on disco-pop cut ‘Daydream’

Wolverhampton-based songstress Cariss Auburn’s latest single ‘Daydream’ is infused with groovy, disco-pop influences with a slight hint of 90s city pop. In the track, the singer invites us on a rendezvous into her little world, summing up the track in her own words as “a 3-minute holiday”.

‘Daydream’ quite literally makes the listener feel like they’ve entered a spellbinding daydream. Auburn pairs smooth, dream-like vocals with lyrics drenched in a burning desire for wanderlust and sweet escape, simultaneously conveying melancholy and eagerness. Accompanying trippy, hypnotic visuals perfectly capture the aesthetic of hallucinatory escapism Auburn has created with the track.

MarthaGunn ooze celestial vibes with the debut of new single 'Honest'

Brighton based indie-rock band MarthaGunn have delighted fans with the release of their latest celestial single ‘Honest.’ Comprising five best friends Abi Woodman, Max Hunter, Humphrey Luck, Ally Mackay and Frankie Sparrowhawk, this is the band’s first music in 2021, following their EP ‘Caught Up & Confused’, and follow-up single ‘Nowhere To Run’ in 2020.

The multifaceted band have amassed a slew of praise which has crystalised reviews on CLASH, Independent, Dork and The Line of Best Fit. MarthaGunn has also featured on both the BBC Introducing Track of The Week and John Kennedy (Radio X). Their music is an amalgamation, sampling the rock elements from Fleetwood Mac, vocals of Florence and The Machine, the sonic cues from indie-pop trio Haim and the ambient and contemporary sound of R&B legend James Blake.

Lizzie Reid’s emotional debut EP Cubicle

Cubicle is a touching tour through the ups and downs of the end of a relationship. There are many aspects of the album that draw you in, where you can’t help but relate to not only the devastation of the end of a relationship, but Lizzie expertly captures the smaller moments of melancholy.

The moments that come as time passes and your path veers further and further from a lost love, a moment that Lizzie has captured in Seamless as she sings “You asked how’s my sister, the wedding’s next summer and I’m sad that you won’t be there.”

The Horrors take industrial route on new EP ‘Lout’

South East band, The Horrors, are back with a new three-track EP that takes them back to their roots with a much heavier release.

It has now been four years since The Horrors released their album ‘V’ which had a much more mainstream indie style then they had ever had before. Adele’s producer Paul Epworth worked on the record and it looked at the time like the band were heading down the commercial avenue.

However, we are here now in 2021 and the new EP ‘Lout’ is the bands heaviest material to date. You could be mistaken for thinking you had gone back over ten years on first listen of the EP.

Is ‘Octopus’ by ISLAND really an octopus?

London based alt rock band ISLAND have released their smooth new single ‘Octopus’ along with a tranquil beach set video to go with it.

The four-man band delivers a real masterclass in easy-listening with a rhythm that could surely mellow out Charles Bronson even if he were halfway through a prison brawl with a punching bag.

Following on from hits like ‘Stargazer’ and ‘Just That Time of Night’ ISLAND are forging quite the reputation for songs with a dreamy feel that transport their listener to a state of bliss. Just as much as it is a song ‘Octopus’ is an experience.

Striking Leeds band unleash two new singles of alt rock magic

The hard alt rock outfit Gentleman’s Brawl from Leeds have two striking new singles to unleash. Their sound can be described as punchy, passionate rock with a harmonious wash along the lines of Billy Talent, Rise Against, Dark Station and Biffy Clyro circa the Puzzle era.

Black Tar is an anthemic and ferociously melodious track, the kind that would start a record off impeccably. The introductory contemplative guitar warns you that what is directly forthcoming is going to blow your socks off. Ten seconds in, we’re proven right and off we go on a powerhouse journey that, if you’re a fan of this kind of rock, you never get tired of hearing. The vocals are ardent, the guitar is symphonious and the drums and bass are tight, keeping the layers of this tune locked together.

Chemtrails Over The Country Club - A pop of colour in an other wise bleak month

When Born to Die came out, I had the album on repeat for months. With my headphones in and the volume turned up high, Lana Del Rey's smoky voice blanketed my morning commute from London's suburbs into the city. I couldn't get enough. It was the first album in my adulthood that felt like mine and mine alone. I still get a thrill seven years later when I hear her voice, but does Chemtrails Over The County Club hit the same?

COVID may have halted production, driving the initial album release date into the new year. Still, Chemtrails Over The Country Club is finally here and not without some initial controversy over this seventh studio album.

newfamiliar flaunt their genre-bending abilities with latest single ‘How Can I?’

How Can I? by West Yorkshire-based outfit newfamiliar is a chilled yet fervent indie pop track.

It’s a fairly different sound to when they were Skinny Living a few years back. Ryan Johnston’s vocals are almost unrecognisable, but in a very credible way. It would seem their former rock n’ roll, bluesy variant of indie has matured into a more mellow, ruminative form of the genre with this track - but this is executed deliciously and it is evident that the passion remains.

The Grammys 2021: Wow, that was actually really good?

The Grammys, one of the biggest nights in the music industry, ditched its typical award show aesthetic and went for a more intimate approach; one that actually seemed to focus on the musicians and their music. With performances from the likes of Harry Styles, Haim and Black Pumas, the award show showcased a range of genres, highlighting the sheer breadth of talent this industry has to offer. Tributes were also paid to Little Richard, Kenny Rogers, John Prine and Gerry Marsden; legendary musicians who paved the way for today's artists and their music.

Saint Raymond’s back with a Soft Landing

Saint Raymond drops his latest single ‘Soft Landing’ in anticipation of his latest album ‘We Forgot We Were Dreaming’ (releasing April 16th), his first full release in six years.

Despite a year of worldwide tour cancelations and postponements, the Nottingham based singer-songwriter has been busy, releasing six singles since May of 2020 in the run up to his new album. Gaining his name by mixing the street he grew up on and his grandfather’s name, Saint Raymond (real name is Callum Burrows) received early support from BBC Introducing and landed a spot on the introducing stage at Reading and Leeds back in 2013, before signing a deal with Asylum Records.

KNIGHT impresses with his latest single Chemtrail

February 18th saw the latest release from London-based artist KNIGHT. The bedroom-pop producer has kicked 2021 off right... releasing his first self-produced singles and really pushing his name out onto the UK music scene.

According to his Spotify, KNIGHT has previously written music for some of pop's hottest prospects with 2021 being the year he wants to bring his own talents to the fore; and so far, he has succeeded.

Pulsing with rebellion and grunge, meet Iceage’s dark new single ‘Vendetta’

Iceage are back and better than ever with their intoxicating single ‘Vendetta.’ This precedes the Danish’s bands fifth studio album ‘Seek Shelter’ which will be up for grabs via new label Mexican Summer in May.

The new album will also include previously released single ‘The Holding Hand.’ Obscuring the sonic boundaries of punk-rock music with spacey synth instrumentals, the Copenhagen-based quartet consists of band members Elias Bender Rønnenfelt, Jakob Tvilling Pless, Johan Surrballe Wieth, and Dan Kjær Nielsen.

‘Overcast Conditions’ ‘Ignorance’ (LP) by The Weather Station

Ignorance is a sombre record.  It’s also a dynamic collection of songs. Ten songs, and as The Weather Station’s fifth release in twelve years, represent a steady, synthesised progression from 2017’s eponymous release.  They’re also a good account of why Toronto-based songwriter Tamara Lindeman takes such time between projects.

Time well spent: here, the marked absence of more traditional, acoustic/electric-guitar-oriented elements is at once immaterial with the opening track Robber. Those elements, so tastefully combined in The Weather Station album, now give way to something far more orchestrated and dramatic.

Jody and the Jerms rescue us with their feverish single ‘Get Me Out’

Jody and the Jerms have debuted the searingly addictive single ‘Get Me Out’ on February 15. The Oxford indie-pop group assembled in 2019, and since then have found their groove in a 90s influenced indie genre. ‘Get Me Out’ is the sextet’s first release of 2021 since their debut album ‘Deeper’ which came out last year via JATJ Records.

Comprised of band members Jody, Niall (Jody’s husband), Alex, Peter, Robert & David, their songs ’It’s All Up To You’ and ‘Deeper’ have been promoted on a myriad of radio outlets such as BBC Introducing, Radio X, BBC Ulster, RTE and Sirius XM.

Eades' new single 'Former Warning Cluster' could be the track of the summer

After Reading and Leeds Festival announced that their biggest outdoor event would be returning to the field this summer, a follow up of more gigs could be on the horizon, for a band like Eades this is only the beginning and their coming-of-age sound could be the best dose of sunshine.

The Leeds-based quintet have released their latest single ‘Former Warning Cluster’ on the Heist or Hit Records label, who have also signed with acts such as: Hannah’s Little Sister, Jwestern and Tungz.  The group are self-proclaimed as “David Byrne and Lou Reed’s dyslexic child playing out of a Motorola Pebl” and to summarise, what more could we possibly ask for?

“Channeling” the likes of The Velvet Underground, Talking Heads and The Strokes, Eades have formulated a single that will satisfy your musical cravings… so get ready.

The Vaccines release the comforting, fittingly cosy warmth of ‘Fire’, the latest from their upcoming covers EP

The Vaccines, erroneously featured in last year’s ‘Best Landfill Indie’ feature, have released their latest cover, one which transcends any notion of landfill.

‘Fire’, originally by Waxahatchee, follows previous covers of Queens of the Stone Age’s ‘No One Knows’ and Kacey Musgraves’ ‘High Horse’ – which feature on the upcoming ‘Cosy Karaoke Vol. 1’ EP.

Go CRAZY for Gal Go Grey and their upcoming debut album!

Gal Go Grey is a duo comprised of Argentinian saxophonist Ignacia Salvadores and London based producer Tom Grey. They have produced an incredibly unique sound together, that just commands your attention.

They have released a taster of what is to come from their debut album, due 16th March, when they dropped their new single ‘Flama’ on 9th February. The duo worked on the record mainly during lockdown, which certainly adds a silver lining to the last 12 months. Whilst unusual in the fact that this track doesn’t have any lyrics this piece is exactly the kind of escapism that is welcomed with open arms during lockdown.

Claire Rosinkranz’s new single ‘Real Life’, gives us a relatable insight into a whole generation

Last month, Claire Rosinkranz released her latest single Real Life. The track is paired with a second single, ‘Parking Lot’, and follows the artist’s viral sensation, Backyard Boy, which blew up on TikTok in 2020. The song has an upbeat melody throughout and knowing that Rosinkranz describes her sound as “alternative-blues-pop”, you can hear her main influences coming through within the tune, from The Beatles and Frank Ocean to Still Woozy and Benee.

The artist writes all of her music herself, whilst recording and producing the songs, with the help of her dad, at their own home studio. This arguably makes the high quality of Real Life all the more impressive.

'Sharing my experiences with the world so they don’t feel alone', Millie Milner opens up about all things music

Hailing from ‘God’s own country’ itself, Yorkshire artist Millie Milner has once again graced the ears of fans and new listeners alike with new single Troubled Mind. Milner is definitely one to watch on the music scene; as they are readily producing a steady stream of top class songs, and proving that Milner knows exactly who they are as an artist and that their music is to be taken seriously.

Troubled Mind has Milner displaying a combination of their haunting vocals and the soft gentle instrumental backing. The song is an open and heartfelt number that gives listeners a feeling of security and hope. Milner’s choice of lyrics such as ‘settle down you’re troubled mind, close your eyes, it’ll be alright’ and ‘you just take my hand and I’ll make it all okay’ allow for a direct emotional connection between listener and song, and in some ways artist an song with the lyrics providing listeners with a sense of security and that they can reach out and find someone reaching back for them ready to help support them and protect and help them find their way through the darkness.

Basciville remind us what real music is with debut album ‘Hymns to the Air’

I have recently found that finding new ways to express my appreciation for really good music isn’t coming easily to me. I know there are infinite combinations of words and sentiments and punctuation and all that but you find yourself wandering back to the same expressions, the same outlines, the same words. For the sake of this review however, to honour and do the artists justice, I will try and be as authentic and as original as they are.

Basciville have released their debut album Hymns to the Air and I was in it for the ride from the opening bars...

Laurence Murray Project release sultry debut single ‘Providence’

Scottish quartet Laurence Murray Project have released their debut single ‘Providence’, a tune with soulful, sultry vocals and powerful instrumentals

Formed in Edinburgh, Laurence Murray Project is the birth child of songwriter and guitarist, Laurence Murray. Murray’s song writing is believed to be inspired by his travels in the Middle East, where he underwent serious self-exploration, but the band’s music is also heavily inspired by 60s psychedelic rock and a number of other well-known artists, such as Jimi Hendrix. ‘Providence’ was released in late February and the band are said to be working on their debut album ‘Still’,  which is expected later this year.

Taylor Swift re-records 13yr old hit ‘Love Story’

From teenage country singer to global superstar, Taylor Swift has forged a formidable music career. Celebrated as a pop cultural icon, her artistry is plagued with vulnerability and resilience, and steeped with creativity.

The Pennsylvania-born star amassed headlines by announcing that she will be re-recording her entire discography in order to regain control of her music. In 2019 Swift’s master recordings were sold to Shamrock Capitol in 2019, against her will.

It’s-a-me Darling Boy - “Tea Drinkers Of The World” official video revisits Mario World videogame

Darling BOY has just released a new track, called “Tea Drinkers Of The World”. There’s nothing better than an alt-pop tune with guitar-pop bridges and a simple but catchy chorus, compressed in two and a half minutes. Behind Darling Boy hides Alexander Gold’s genius. He’s a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and actor. According to his Twitter, he considers himself as a sweet punk elf with a wide knowledge, in other words, a polymath. When he’s not busy with the United Kingdom Ukulele Orchestra, he plays bass, guitar and drums for Supergrass’ Danny Goffey’s new band. Not to mention his role as The Clash’s drummer in “London Town” drama.

The story of Shay Baker, a 14-year-old boy from a working-class family and his punk revelation. Everyone loves Alexander Gold, even Dolly Parton. Rumor has it she invited him in deepest Tennessee as a guest. He also had a chat with Moby during a casual dinner.

Aussie Trio 'Middle Kids' release new single 'Cellophane (Brain)'

Australian musical trio Middle Kids have recently released their new single Cellophane (Brain) and its set to be another hit that the Sydney based band can add to their ever growing catalogue of musical successes. Since their formation in 2016, Middle Kids have continued on an ever evolving trajectory of success that doesn’t look set to slow down anytime soon.

The song begins with an electronic opening that sound wise is almost comparable to a retro video game sound track. The electro then becomes the background sound to allow for the layers of acoustic guitar and Hannah Joy’s lead vocals to take centre stage. Her vocals give the song a softness and provide the listener with a gentle comfort. The instrumental sounds are almost unheard during the verses of the song allowing Joy’s vocals and the lyrics to become the focus. However, when the chorus hits the song hits home with its volume and power with Joy’s vocals being matched with the power of the guitar and drums, and her higher notes giving a haunting feel to the song that gets under your skin.

Inspiration, the subconscious and old Tony Curtis films: An Interview with Ollie Trevers from The Great Leslie

While their most recent single “Out Of My Hands” demonstrates a polished sound that harkens back to the stadium anthems of 2000s pop rock (think The Killers/Kaiser Chiefs/The Fray) The Great Leslie is a band that refuses to be pigeonholed.

Citing influences such as Queen, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix, the band have already displayed an array of styles from post punk, psychedelic and even a dash of house music (“I Know You Know”, which still contains an ample amount of rock n’ roll flair). They have also amassed an impressive fanbase since forming in 2019, with comical band updates presented to fans via their blog.

I had the chance to speak with Oliver Trevers from The Great Leslie about upcoming music, inspiration and the trials and tribulations of being a musician during lockdown...

‘Get High’ and vibe with Chet Faker’s latest release

Chet Faker is back and better than ever with his latest release ‘Get High’. The new single contains a funky beat with edgy lyrics, and is very mellow and laid-back, with a slight party feel. The track completely flows from start to finish, delighting us with a bouncy piano melody.

For a song that he explains ‘just showed up on its own,’ is superbly uplifting if not anything else. ‘Get High’ evokes the atmosphere of being high, with its relaxing yet upbeat style. Whether you’re standing up or sitting down you can’t help but tap your foot to the beat of the groove.

The return of Slowthai: reviewing Tyron

Slowthai has re-entered the spotlight with his new album, Tyron. Featuring collaborations with ASAP Rocky, Skepta and many more top artists, the Northampton rapper’s newest album is not one to be missed.

Slowthai has never been afraid of exceeding expectations, breaking social norms, or hiding polemical opinions; often making national news headlines with his energetic, daring, and chaotic performances. Although his fast paced, and often, politically charged music may not be to everyone’s taste, one subject on which all can agree is his unwavering ability to cause a stir: holding up a model of Boris Johnson’s severed head at the 2019 Mercury Prize ceremony and starting a brawl with a crowd member during the 2020 NME Awards are just a fraction of examples of the British rapper’s anarchic persona.

Dan+Shay's "Glad You Exist" is a sweet dedication to all types of love

American pop Country Duo Dan and Shay released their hit single, "Glad You Exist," on February 5, 2021. A perfect love song to bring warmth and hope in these current times. The superstar duos shared their songwriting process by collaborating with Tayla Parx, Jordan Reynolds, and Ryan Lewis.

Grammy Country singers triumphed to write a gentle-hearted soundtrack with an upbeat pop-acoustic to a purely intimate song. Three simple words, "Glad You Exist," expressing jubilation to finding true love.

To Reverie and Beyond, FLAWES are flying high

With the recent release of their new EP Reverie, FLAWES have debuted a new chapter in their story and a new era in their career with the EP, its concept and its accompanying theme. The trio have like so many others had the wind knocked from their sails in 2020 with the global pandemic; but that wasn’t going to stop them from doing what they love and so they set to work learning new skills and utilising their existing musical talent and the result is something truly special in the form of Reverie

The Reverie EP is a form of light in the darkness we’ve all had to endure, its offers a little bit of everything. The 6 track EP gives listeners a mixture of upbeat pop songs that induce the feeling of joy and happiness in Holding Out For the Win, the more emotional ballad style numbers that you can get lost in with I Don’t Quit for No One and the songs that you can’t help but get lost in like Move Over; and it also sees a collaboration with Mali-Koa in Higher Than Before that feels like the song that ties the upbeat pop, with the emotional ballad and the escapist number to lose yourself to.

Blu De Tiger continues her reign as the queen of the bass guitar in new single ‘Vintage’

With only a few songs in her discography, Blu De Tiger has already created an identity for herself, and has an unmistakable style, both in her fashion and her music. From hearing the first few bars of the song, and that sublime groovy bassline, this song is unmistakably Blu De Tiger.

I think the thing that is so quintessentially brilliant about all of Blu's discography is the way she spotlights the bass, taking it from an instrument generally assumed to have the role of a backing track to front and centre on stage; as a bass player myself this approach fills me with excitement - perhaps a new chapter is beginning for the bass, finally giving it credit for the amazing and versatile instrument that it is.

A Gospel According to Nick; Nick Cave & Warren Ellis - Carnage

Despite a 30-year musical relationship and much film collaboration, Carnage is the first full-length project Nick Cave and Warren Ellis have done as a duo.  And Carnage came quickly: ‘An accelerated process of intense creativity,’ comments Ellis, ‘the eight songs were there in one form or another within the first two and a half days.’ And Carnage is intense.

Ellis is Cave’s compatriot and pivotal, co-writing, Bad Seed. He is also a formally-trained, poly-instrumentalist (violin, viola, piano, flute, guitar, bouzouki, mandolin…) who has so exquisitely written and arranged the string section framing the album.  Only a musician of such calibre could achieve such nuance, colour and drama as Ellis has here.

The perfect sunny day anthem – review of CIEL’s latest single ‘Pretty Face’

Brighton alt-pop trio, CIEL, returned earlier this month with their latest single ‘Pretty Face’, a nostalgia-inducing, upbeat song with a dreamy ambience.

They formed in Brighton after Dutch lead singer, Michelle Hindrix, found two new friends with a similar passion for music. Since then, they have performed alongside the likes of TEEN and Penelope Isles, climbing their way up the music industry. Having their first music release in 2017, CIEL have since transcended their sound - previous releases were moody and hazy, the perfect backdrop for a rainy day, whereas their new release sees them potentially in a new era in which they explore a more upbeat sound.

DMA’s Live at Brixton - Album Review

March 6th 2020, just before the madness struck and the world went into lockdown, the Aussie band DMA’s took to the stage at the London O2 Brixton Academy, exactly a year later, they brought out their 2nd live album, ‘Live at Brixton Academy’, released digitally and on limited edition vinyl.

DMA’s played their biggest headline show to date before the release of their third studio album The Glow, which was released in April 2020. Performing major hits such as ‘Step Up The Morphine’, ‘Delete’, 'In The Air', ‘Play It Out’, and ‘Lay Down’, the Aussie trio also performed a part of the new album ‘Life Is a Game of Changing’, ‘Hello Girlfriend’, ‘The Glow’, and ‘Silver’.

“Relapse”: The New Relatable Release by FAANGS

Watch out world, there is a well-known name making their way back into the music industry and they are not coming back quietly.

Melissa “Charlie” Storwick is best known for winning season four of the Canadian hit musical talent show, The Next Star in 2011. Even more impressive, she did it when she was only twelve and became the first contestant to hit over a million views on YouTube. After her win, she scored the role as Piper Grey on the popular Canadian show, Some Assembly Required.  The show ended in 2016 and this allowed her to take the time she needed to prefect her craft. Once she felt her creation was ready, she introduced herself to the world as FAANGS in 2018.

Hayley Williams’ talent has blossomed again

Hayley Williams will always be most well-known as the front woman of pop punk group ‘Paramore’. A band that changed what it meant to be a woman in this genre and the industry forever. Though we have not had new music from Paramore since 2017, Hayley Williams has not left fans disappointed. After releasing her first solo album ‘Petals For Armour’ in May 2020, this is a swift turnaround that came as a surprise when it was announced only hours before it’s release.

While not being able to play shows or follow their normal schedules, we have seen many artists release more spontaneous music than they had ever done before, and ‘Flowers for Vases/Descansos’ is proof that this new spontaneity and freedom artists, like Hayley Williams, have found has enabled them to create music with more depth and range than ever before. This album is worlds away from the synth pop sound and colourful world of Paramore’s ‘After Laughter’ which uses confident and bright music to disguise it’s downcast lyrics and stories. Now Williams has nothing to hide.

Alien Tango has covered ‘Getting Better’ by the Beatles giving us an extraordinary sound to the song.

Alien Tango has had a unique style since the beginning of his career and is an artist that needs discovering. The Spanish, London based artist has a nack for delivering an unusual experimental sound, full of electro and guitar sounds which have a retro 80’s feel. Keen to keep the listener engaged, he plays around with mixing and matching sounds.

Alien Tango has stated that he brings music from a parallel universe - expect the unexpected - the multi-talented artist is able to play various musical instruments and produce distinctive sound, all  from the comfort of his bedroom.

An EP to get you excited for summer - Sunshine Seekers

‘The Sway’ are a 5 piece indie band from Liverpool who are smashing the Spotify streams with their first EP ‘Sunshine Seekers’. Released 19th Feb 2021, in just over a month the EP has accumulated just over 100,000 streams- a huge triumph. The five Liverpudlians: Ryan McNeed, Ciaran Smith, Harry Robertson, Aiden McLean, Sean Knibb have collectively produced a very well-put-together and professional sounding collection of tracks.

To start off, we have the EP’s titled track ‘Sunshine seekers’ featuring original sounding vocals and a great music video. When I first listened to this track, the lead singer's voice slapped me in the face, he has really got something special. His voice carries a strong distinctive sound for a young singer and the way the scouser accents peeps through sounds amazing. The track comes in hot and maintains enough variation to keep it exciting. Although it is very typical of the genre, I found their use of real instruments refreshing and indulged in the slightly out of tune piano recordings.

“Where does all the time go?” - Ben Howard’s new single ‘What A Day’ offers up an antidote to lockdown blues

‘What A Day’ is the first single from Ben Howard’s fourth studio album, ‘Collections from the Whiteout’, which is set to arrive on 26th March via Island Records.

Three years after Howard’s more experimental ‘Noonday Dream Album’, this new track feels closer to its warm, summary predecessor ‘Every Kingdom’.

Despite the song’s winter release date, it makes me nostalgic for holidays on the coast and listening to songs like ‘Old Pine’ and ‘Only Love’ with my friends on the beach as a teenager. ‘What A Day’ can’t be described as wholly commercial, but it is equally a lot easier for new listeners to appreciate than the tracks of Howard’s more musically complex ‘Noonday Dream’.

Reaching for the Untouchable: Iceage comes out with a new single “The Holding Hand”, a sentimental anthem.

The Holding Hand'' is a new song from Iceage, the Danish Punk band that always manages to deliver the perfect  soundtrack to either conquering the shores during a war, or a mad cry of euphoric dancing. Regardless to say, they always seem to produce a sound that is exclaiming the height of human emotion. But this song in specific creates a different emotional delivery.

All the while on this introspective journey, it still carries the ever growing crescendo of a militaristic ballad that the band so often and effectively delivers.

Citizen’s new single ’Blue Sunday’ is a definite head bobber!

The alternative three-piece Citizen have, in the early weeks of 2021, released their new single Blue Sunday’.

In comparison to their arguably most famous song ’The Night I Drove Alone’ this new track leans more towards an edgy pop sound. About as poppy as a distorted vocal and crisp electric guitar can be anyway.

However, discussions about genres sometimes seem never-ending, and whichever one Citizen have taken on as of late it’s working for them. ’Blue Sunday’ is a definite head bobber. And one that could easily become a regular at the mainstream radio stations.

Howay The Lads, Maximo Park are back with new album Nature Always Wins

Northern lads Maximo Park are back on the scene with a few changes and a new album. The ‘Geordie boys’ were previously a quintet but with changing situations the new Nature Always Wins era sees the band going forward as a trio of Paul Smith, Duncan Lloyd and Tom English.

The album opens with the track Partly Of My Making which has a somewhat psychedelic trip style to it. The song is filled with reverb, electric guitar, a heavy drum beat and electro elements to give it the trip like feeling. The psychedelic style is enhance with the main vocals being layered with falsetto moments that give a haunting sound to the song and almost make it feel like it’s the voices in your mind talking to you that you can hear.

From dirty garage rock to shiny pop, ex member of Spring King tries to make it work.

You have to respect ex-Spring King leader Tarek Musa for carrying on in such a high profile way, what with the release of an EP and this single which got reported on and covered widely. Meanwhile, there’s been radio silence from the other members in terms of solo work or carrying on Spring King without Tarek. Dead Nature seems familiar but also in a world of its own, with Tarek’s usual vocal style now singing over cleaner and more varied instrumentation. Does it work though? Eh.

De Una Vez - Music Has No Language

You don’t need to understand Spanish to recognise the emotions behind Selena Gomez’s new song ‘De una vez’. It is concrete proof that music is more than just the words behind it, it’s feeling, tonality and interpretation.

‘De una vez’, which roughly means at once, is an exploration into the growth and healing that a person experiences after their heart has been broken. Focussing less on the pain and more on the recovery, this song is uplifting and hopeful. It shines a light on dark times and amplifies the strength of someone who has been wrongly dragged backwards through more than just bushes.

Ariel Posen – Now I See - Is He Just Eye Candy?

Ariel Posen, for those who don’t know of him, isn’t just a bit of a heart throb, he’s a wonderfully talented guitarist from the nation we all love, Canada.

Ariel’s new song “Now I See” from his upcoming release “Headway” (March 5th) Forgive me for making a subtle pun but I think he’ll be making Headway with this song.

If you could imagine what a love child of Bruce Springsteen and John Mayer would be, then this is probably what you would have in mind. As a musician myself, I can’t help but analyse all the little intricate details in his playing…however his voice takes over and you can’t help but be lost within his subtle tones.

Sol Paradise and the influence behind his brand new track Tranquil Life

Native Londoner and one-man band Sol Paradise has landed and enlightening our earbuds with ‘Tranquil Life’. He is an artist who has taken inspiration from all kinds of music and his sound is inspired by everything he listens to which is why it is quite hard to pinpoint a specific genre to his music.

He likes to compare his style to Steve Lacey who made a big impact on Sol’s life. Lacey taught him that having your own unique production style is a good thing and you need to embrace that and let the people know that this is what you can do.

The song has 32,000 streams so far which tells you life is looking bright for Sol. The song has a nostalgic fuzzy summer feel to it and makes you dream of happy memories you once had in the good weather enjoying yourself with a drink or two.

“Songs for the Drunk and Broken Hearted”: an ode to lost love in lockdown

Passenger’s thirteenth album release, Songs for the Drunk and Broken-Hearted, is a warm and intimate reflection of the universally recognisable state of grief that we suffer from the aftermath of heartbreak.

Mike Rosenberg (known by his moniker, Passenger) recorded the LP of ten songs at Black Crow Studios in Brighton shortly after ending a relationship back in 2019. Each track is a glimpse into the “fragile window” – as he referred to his post-breakup experience – of loss, and serves to gently manoeuvre us, step by step, through varying emotions and unique, character-driven scenarios stemming from heartache.
