Lana Del Rey – Chemtrails Over the Country Club - Music Video Review

Lana Del Rey has graced us with the music video for ‘Chemtrails Over the Country Club’. This is her second song that she has released from her upcoming album, which will be released on the 19th March 2021. We have been waiting with baited breath for this music video which has been teased to us, and she did not disappoint.

The video begins with Lana exuding her usual old time ethereal beauty…giving us the 60s, retro fantasy, complete with a beautiful red vintage sports car.  This can perhaps be hinting towards the traditional rich white American dream fantasy, as she enjoys this idea of 'classical femininity’

Lana delivers beautiful imagery as she incorporates the usual film camera aspect to the music video -  she has the ability to make me nostalgic for something I haven't experienced.

An rather interesting choice on Lana's behalf - she features her cursed bejewelled mesh mask in majestic flits and scenes through the video – which if you didn’t know Lana wore to one of her booking signings. Fans were quick to criticise her for doing this - we understand that this is a beautiful mask, just NOT at a book signing when Covid is in the air

This features in her video amongst a plethora of other royal jewels - showing opulence through the idyllic imagery… she offers a breathe of warm summers air.

The video beautifully merges time, as her girlfriends her and present us with a beautiful olden look which takes us back in time, yet with the merging of the masks presents a dystopia, as it reflects the reality of the world that we are in whilst merging time. Including her loved ones in this video perhaps hints to the overall vibe of her upcoming album; as this is the title track and in fact the cover art - music fuelled by her nearest and dearest…

Then suddenly she mixes it up.

The switch in the videos comes from her biting into a lemon and a 'Wizard of Oz' like Tornado appearing  (I guess the lemon's bitterness was butterfly effect)… and her and her gang, become a pack of wolves and vampires (slight twilight flashbacks I won’t lie).

As the ladies begin to undress they merge with the images of the wolves, unveiling the nightmare behind the fairy-tale; as they strip into their true form.

Gathering around her burning vehicle - there is imagery of her crashing through a past self - her steaming through the mirror and merging with the wolf - could she be hinting that she is revealing a part of herself to us that we have not seen before? Perhaps a further step towards the real Lana?

This could also give us another meaning the realness behind the rich American façade, like the Chemtrails conspiracy, who knows what actually goes on behind closed doors?

The last image of a full moon draws me to her lyrics: 'my moon is in Leo, my Cancer is sun' (we love an astrology babe), which hints at her spiritual connection to the moon, and this can be shown through her bond with wolves as they have their connection to the moon as well.

Perhaps throughout the video she takes us on a journey through the past Lana, transforming into her truer, inner self.
